Reducing Your Electricity Bill

Wednesday, July 18, 2012
There are many different ways to reduce your electricity bill for the month, which is especially important in Florida during the summer when costs often skyrocket with electricity in the sweltering heat.

First and foremost, keeping your equipment running properly is a big help to keeping your costs down.  This means cleaning your air filters on a regular basis, both for central air and for any individual window and wall units, as dirt and dust can hinder the air flow and reduce efficiency of these items.  You may also want to hire a certified technician to check your heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems yearly to ensure that they are working at their peak efficiency.  Programming your thermostat might be a good idea as well, by setting it higher when you will be at work you can save up to $180 a year according to Energy Star.

Make sure that all cracks along windows and door frames are also properly sealed with caulk or weather-stripping to help improve energy efficiency by up to 20% a year.  Also, save the chores for night time – running heat-generating appliances like the oven, dishwasher, and clothes dryer should be limited during the day when temperatures are the hottest.

Also, changing light bulbs from incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescents can help, as well as making sure that your blinds or shades are closed to stop sunlight from raising the temperature.  Using a fan can also help make the room feel cooler even if the air is not put down.  Finally, make sure to unplug gadgets that you are not using, like cell phone chargers or microwaves, as these and similar devices on standby can account for 5% to 10% of residential electricity use.

By keeping these items in mind, you will be well on your way to keeping cool and saving money this summer.
